Hosting An AAR

AFTER ACTION REVIEWS are critical to the ongoing success of every recurring event or initiative. Use the following steps to conduct a truly helpful AAR.
ACT FAST
The further you get away from your event, the harder it is to remember things that need to be tweaked. Preferably, schedule your AAR in advance to take place in a quiet place as soon as the event concludes.

COME PREPARED
All team members should arrive with their notes from the event, including 3 Sustains (three things that were good) and 3 Improves (three things that need to be changed).

BE BRIEF
AAR’s should not last more than 30 minutes. Give each team member uninterrupted time to share his or her feedback.

PIN THE ROSE
For each Improve that the team agrees should be incorporated, clearly designate the team member who will be responsible for implementing the change.

CELEBRATE THE WIN
Always end on a high note. Share stories from the event, thank team members who went above and beyond, pray for the participants, eat good food — basically, have fun!!!
