10 Tips From Timothy

As leaders, we are instructed to walk in truth & grace as we pastor the people God has placed in our care. This isn’t always easy and requires an enormous amount of wisdom & humility. But we have some great tips from Paul as he coached his protégé, Timothy, through some sticky situations in the early church.

GIVE TRUTH TO THE PROUD & GRACE TO THE HUMBLE
“We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious.”
1 Timothy 1:8-9

NEVER STOP PRAYING FOR YOUR LEADERS
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
1 Timothy 2:1

DON’T RUSH DISCIPLESHIP
“He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.”
1 Timothy 3:6

KEEP GROWING
“Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
1 Timothy 4:15-16

GUARD YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
“Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.”
1 Timothy 5:1-2

PROTECT YOUR TEAM’S PURITY
Confront false teaching, quarrels, disunity, greed, and arrogance.
1 Timothy 6

PRAY DAILY FOR YOUR TEAM
“I thank God…as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.”
2 Timothy 1:3

APPROACH SIN WITH GENTLENESS
“Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”
2 Timothy 2:25

LEADERSHIP MUST BE BIBLE-BASED
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17

GO THERE
“Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.”
2 Timothy 4:2
